John examines Colossians 3:18-4:1 along with parallel passages from Ephesians to explain a concept of freedom that is many ways subversive. In the midst of the structures and hierarchies of human society, God asks us live out his peace through submission to one another; in the midst of this submission and sacrifice, we discover a freedom that changes who we are.

Instead of focusing on the lies being told, Paul choose to only focus on the truth being denied or misrepresented. Paul’s reasons were simple: lies come and go, shift and change, but the truth is always the same. John looks at some ways we can become experts in recognizing God’s truth in a world full of distortions, misrepresentations, and ulterior motives.
