Starting New Teaching Series: Back to Basics

We are starting a new series for the summer titled Back to Basics. The Back to Basics series is an examination of the foundations of the Christian faith using the book Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis to explore these truths. For more information, see our teaching series page.

]]> The Back to Basics series will start June 29th and continue through September 15th. To get the most out of the series, we’d recommend you read (or listen) along in Mere Christianity. We have provided some links to audio and print versions of the first few chapters. We have also posted a study guide hand out for the first week.

We hope you can join us for this wonderful new series. If you can’t join us physically, consider adding our podcast.

First Sports Picnic of the Summer!

This Sunday, we will be kicking off the summer with our first Sports Picnic! Our sports picnics are a wonderful way to have fun in the sun while getting to know others through sports. We’ll have a variety of sports going during the picnic, along with specific activities geared towards children. And if you just enjoy soaking up the sun, there’s plenty of grass to spread out on!

What: Food & Fun at the Park
When: Sunday, June 29th
Where: The fields at Westgate Academy School
Time: After Church (11:30/12:00pm)
Bring: a blanket or park/beach chairs and a lunch for you and your family. Some folks bring coolers and packed lunches, while others pick up salads and sandwiches. Sunscreen is also good!

We will have the equipment for the following activites: Boci Ball, Wiffle Ball, Chicago-Style Softball, Ultimate Frisbee, Football.

As mentioned already, this is our first sports picnic—there will be others! Be sure to sign up with our calendar to keep up-to-date on future BSF events!

Using the Beacon Calendar

Beaconnet.org makes use of Google Calendar for scheduling and displaying up and coming events. This allows us to present you with a lot of ways to use and display calendar information. You can even automatically feed Beacon events into your Calendar!

]]> Adding the Beacon Calendar Events to Your Personal Calendar

If you go to the calendar page, you will see several buttons available to you:

These buttons, (in order) allow you to do the following:

“Add to Google Calendar” — you can click on this button and add the Beacon Calendar to your personal Google Calendar account. Now events will automatically appear in your Google Calendar every time you open your Google Calendar.
“XML” — subscribe to the Beacon calendar events as an RSS feed or to include it into RSS feed capable calendar programs.
“ICAL” — add the Calendar to your iCalendar-capable calendar program. This includes Apple’s iCal and Mozilla Thunderbird and Lightning. Note that Outlook support for the iCalendar protocol is very poor. There is a plugin to enable iCalendar support in Outlook 2003/2007, but no one at Beaconnet.org can help you install or support that plugin (sorry, you are on your own!).

Click on the button that is appropriate for the software you use for calendaring. Depending on the software, you should see the Beacon calendar almost immediately. When new events are posted to the Calendar, you should see them automatically (but double check your settings to be sure!).

PLEASE NOTE: Adding the iCal link to your calendar program may not set it up to automatically update the calendar from Beacon. Be sure your edit the properties for the Beacon calendar once it is in your program and set it to auto-refresh. This will keep you up to date on the latest Beacon events!

Currently, all calendar events go through specific people. This is because we want to be sure we cut down on duplication and because we often need a central contact for event planning.
