Using Beacon Mailing Lists

You recently were added to a Beacon mailing list, or someone told you to check out a particular mailing list. Where do you find them? How do you get on to a mailing list? Or maybe you just want off a Beacon mailing list? This entry describes how to go about managing your Beacon email life.

Unsubscribing from a Mailing List

This entry is first to make sure that getting off a mailing list is easy and painless. If you no longer want to be a mailing list, we’ll miss you—but we also don’t want you to feel harassed by receiving emails you no longer care about!

  1. Go to the mailing list management/info page. At the bottom of the email you received from the mailing list should be a link labeled “Manage/Unsubscribe at: [link]”. Click on that link. If you can’t find the link, go to the mailing list server and find the list you want to be removed from. If you still can’t find the mailing list link, please contact us, and someone will help you get unsubscribed. Please include your contact information and the list you are trying to unsubscribe from in the contact form.
  2. Once you are on the list management page, scroll down to the bottom of the page. You should see a form labeled “[LISTNAME] subscribers”: Mailing List Subscriber Form Put the email address you receive email from the list at in the box under “To unsubscribe from LIST, get a password reminder …”. Then click the “Unsubscribe or edit options” button.
  3. On the next page, click on the “Unsubscribe” button.
  4. Wait for the confirmation email to arrive. We apologize if you are fed up with email at this point, but the confirmation email is to ensure someone can’t unsubscribe you without your consent.
  5. Either reply to the confirmation email or click on the link included in the email to complete your unsubscription.

If none of this works for you, please contact us, and someone will help you get unsubscribed.

Finding a Mailing List

First, you can see what public mailing lists Beacon provides by going to the mailing list server. It will show you the current, publicly available mailing lists.

Not all Beacon lists are public or advertised. If you don’t see a list that you are pretty sure is there, please contact us, and someone will help you find the list you are looking for.

Subscribing to a Mailing List

  1. Find the list you want to subscribe to at the mailing list server. Click on the list. If you can’t find the list, ask an admin at contacts, and they will send you a link to the mailing list.
  2. Once you are on the mailing list info page, you will see a form like this:Subscribing to a Mailing ListFill in the form with your information. Include your name to make it easier for Beacon admins to know who the email address belongs to.
  3. You will receive a confirmation email at the address you specified. Confirm the email according to the instructions in the email (either by replying or clicking on the link provided in the email).
  4. Now patiently wait. All Beacon email lists require a moderator to approve your request. This is to prevent spam.
  5. You will receive an email confirming your subscription was approved. Happy emailing!

Changing Mailing List Options

Beacon mailing lists come with a lot of options. Sometimes you want to change how you get or receive email, or you want to put your name to your email address in the list. You can do all that (and much more) using the following steps.

  1. Go to the mailing list management/info page. At the bottom of the email you received from the mailing list should be a link labeled “Manage/Unsubscribe at: [link]”. Click on that link. If you can’t find the link, go to the mailing list server and find the list you want to manage your options for. If you still can’t find the mailing list link, please contact us, and someone will help you find it.
  2. Once you are on the list management page, scroll down to the bottom of the page. You should see a form labeled “[mailing list name] subscribers”: Mailing List Subscriber Form Put the email address you receive email from the list at in the box under “To unsubscribe from LIST, get a password reminder …”. Then click the “Unsubscribe or edit options” button.
  3. Put your mailing list password in the “Password:” field and click on the “Log in” button. Can’t remember your password? Click the “Remind” button at the bottom of the page, and then use that password to log in.
  4. Make any changes you want and click the submit button.

My Address Has Changed, and I Can Still Use the Old One

Use the above instructions for “Changing Mailing List Options” and use the “Changing your LISTNAME membership information” form to change your address. A confirmation email will be sent to your old address. Follow the confirmation instructions in the email (reply to the email or use the included link), and your address will be changed.

My Address Has Changed, and I CANNOT Use the Old One

Please contact an admin, and send us the information like the mailing list name, your old address, and your new one. Someone will try to help you sort this out!
